I was originally going to get a betta, but people were telling me you need a heater. I had a betta a couple years ago and he just lived in a bowl without a heater and he lived for 2 years! I still have his bowl and was hoping to get another fish to fill it with. Should I get another betta or get a different fish? If so, what kind?

2 years isn't long for a betta so I'm not sure if you think it is or not, it probably would of lived longer if it had a heater and filter. If you want to get another fish then please provide it with what it needs and all fish need a filter and enough room to swim and since you say it's a bowl it is probably too small for any fish.

I don't know where people got the idea that they live in mud puddles since in the wild they live in rice paddies, here is link to show you what they look like, http://www.bettadreams.com/ricepaddies.html .
I also don't know where people get the idea that tropical fish don't need heaters, I guess they don't understand what tropical means.

Betta's do not need a heater and they will live in a bowl just fine. They are born in mud puddles and dislike water movement.

This is what you would need for a Betta:
1. A bowl that is about a gallon of water
2. Rocks for the bottom (a 2lb bag is fine)
3. A Plant that the Betta can rub on and hide in
4. Water conditioner for Betta's
5. Betta food (flakes or pellets)
6. A small net
7. The Betta of your choice

Now the Steps to setting up the Betta Bowl:

1. You want to wash the rocks with hot water to get any loose coloring off of the rocks.
2. Put the rocks in the bottom of the bowl
3. Place the plant in the rocks
4. Fill the bowl with room temp water
5. Add Water conditioner and Let sit for 15 Min's
6. Add your Betta

Care for the Betta:
1. Feed your Betta once a day just a few flakes or 2 to 3 Pellets
2. Change the water once a week. Take some of the water from his bowl and put it in the container he came in. Take the fish net and catch your Betta and place him in the cup. Then just follow the directions on setting up the bowl for the Betta.

With the proper care Betta's can live for several years!

You can get all of this at your local Pet Smart. Pet Smart comes with a 14 Day guarantee on all live pets. Just make sure you keep the fish and receipt.

Whatever you do do not get saltwater fish for your bowl. A beta is easy to care and doesn't need a heater. Some people will tell you to get a goldfish, but goldfish need a lot of room. So a beta is probably your best bet.

Get salt water fish (they're really pretty). The type of fish that you should get are the type that was on "Finding Nemo".
