I've tried deleting all my unecessary files and still, at most I have around 1 gb of free space left. The thing is, all my programs and files combined that are left on my harddrive would only take up to 10-15 gb at most.

Take into account that around 8Gb is taken up in Hidden Files.
These file are critical for the system Operatering system to run.
They are hidden to preventing being tampered with.

I would also run a disk defragement:

↓ Start
↓ Apllications
↓ System tools

This will move files to create more space

A 40 gig drive might only start with about 27 gigs of free space due to hidden file that the computer needs to run.

subtract the other 10 - 15 you siad your programs take up..

you left with about 12 to 17 gigs.

Musice, movies or game saves, temp files, cookies, even pictures can kill 10 gigs in a heartbeat.

when you delete the file often its still around somewhere get something like erase pro which takes the deleted file right off the system
the registry file often carries ext files from deleted files
use disc clean up
defrag
look at programs like microsoft office do you need all the components like access, excel, you can customize in the control panel
delete programs not used some run right from the disc no need to install
keep in mind pictures, music movies take up lots of room save this stuff to cd's or dvd's then erase from computer

hope this helps

Windows XP takes up more than it's predecessors, it won't gobble up a 40Gb HD though. If your content with the computer you have, try adding another IDE hard drive. You can get a 120 GB real cheap these days. Just set the dip switch to be the "Slave" drive, and plug it in.

Two things to think about.

[1] Install and run CCleaner (get it from ccleaner.com) -- It's free and will get rid of a lot of junk on your machine that you didn't even know you had.

[2] Defrag your harddrive -- It takes a long time but it should get you some space back.

your operating system takes up a lot of space and your Microsoft office and any other program like that take up a lot of space. but you could also have a lot of internet trash like cookies and temporary files if you have not already deleted them try that.
A 40GB hard drive is not big by today standards because all the programs are getting bigger is size I would recommend to up grade to a bigger hard drive. I personally have a 150GB and that is plenty big

hope this helps

Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup. Clean all your drives of unwanted space. In Disk Cleanup, click on 'More Options' tab and then select 'Clean Now' button of System Restore. Hit OK.

What operating system are you using? Windows XP media center edition takes up about 15 MB. Your operating sytem is probably what is taking up most of you hard drive. My advice is to get a bigger hard drive but it might be cheaper to get a whole new computer.

Check your harddrive for errors. Maybe you have bad sectors on the disk that cannot be used.
