Most people throughout human history lived in what we would consider poverty. Only with the technological advances in the last 150 years has this changed. The question is why some countries utilized technology to increase the income of their citizens while others did not. In part it is a matter of timing. Until the end of WWII and the end of colonialism the countries that had head start stayed ahead. Since then some countries have shown growth spurts making huge advances in income, for example Japan, Korea, and poorer EU countries, and more recently even China and India. But many countries have lagged behind. The laggards often are plagued by war, drought, disease and corruption. I think answer lies in the cause of the growth in the developing countries because poverty is the absence of wealth.

Poverty can be caused by thousands of things. The government can cause it with bad policies. It can be caused by over population. Big companies. Those are just the ones I can think of off the top of my head, I had a semester long course about this.
