R12 and R22 are the refrigerants that harm the ozone layer and they are not toxic. They are lighter than air and can rise upto the level of the ozone layer.

These refrigerants are actually Chloro-Flouro-Carbons, consisting of a good amount of Carbon, Chlorine and Flourine. Now since ozone is highly unstable as compared to oxygen, it reacts with these gases and oxidises them. Thus the ozone layer is depleted....

Actually R12 and R22 are not Toxic they just combine with Ozone in the Ozone layer and form things that come down as rain or just fall freely by gravity, the layer is eaten up this way.

The ice caps at poles are melting because of the ubrella effect provided by ozone is disapearing.

the depletion of ozone in simple terms means,
conversion of ozone into ooxygen
chemically 2(ozone) = 3(oxygen)
the refrigents accelerate this prossess and also act as the agents themself.
thats how the ozone gets depleted.
