HEAD FIRST...... only kidding. Actually I had gone to group therapy that focused on being gay and dealing with the family. I had no idea how my family would react, but one Sunday I stopped over my parents house and sat them down and simply told them that I loved them and I was gay, I hated living a lie. They looked at me and said they loved me and they already knew. They didn't want to confront me with the issue and figured they would wait for me to approach them, they had done their homework..... they read and did research and already realized that my being gay was nobodies fault and it's just the way I am. My only choice in the matter was to accept it in myself. My parents are great people, I should have trusted them earlier. This is my story.... I have also heard of friends that have been cut-off from their families..... very sad. In any case, I think I would be prepared for the worst and hope for the best....good luck.

My parents were sitting in the living room and my mom was reading a Christmas letter from my cousin and his partner. She asked me if I knew if they were a gay couple. This was the perfect opportunity for me to come out. I said yes, and then said, "This is probably a good time to tell you this, I'm gay. My mom responded by saying "you are?" and then she asked how long I knew and how I knew. I told her I had known a long time and that I just knew. She said that she was glad that I shared it with her. My dad was very quiet and didn't say anything. Although, he is a quiet person anyway. I am sure he is okay with it, because he doesn't act any different around me. Later that evening my mom came in to my room and again thanked me for telling her, she said she knew it must have been hard for me and that I could talk to her about it whenever I wanted and that she loved me. Luckily, I have very great and understanding parents.
Good luck. I'm sure your parents will be just as understanding.

I was pushed out, kicking and screaming!

No, seriously. I came out sideways. I was too chicken to actually say anything to my parents faces so I did so in a letter to my mother which I hid in a copy of "Love, Ellen" by Betty Degeneres, which I then hid in her dressing table drawer on Christmas Eve...knowing she's find it Christmas Morning.

Later that morning I got a call from my Father asking if I was still planning on coming over.
When I did they were sitting in their favorite spots in the livingroom. My Dad in his favorite easy chair and my Mother on the sofa, with the book sitting next to her and the letter in her hand.
When I finally inched my way inside, Mom just lifted the letter and said: "Duh! Why did you think we didn't already know?....What took you so long?"
We had a good laugh and then one of the most enjoyable Christmas' I've ever had with them!

Prepare yourself for the possibility of whom ever you come out to , to not accept it well. If you feel that it is time, then do it. You are the only one that has to deal with your lifestyle. As long as you don't flaunt it in anyone's face, they shouldn't have a problem. Good luck, if you need someone to chat with , just give us a yell.

I wrote a letter to my parents...then read it to them in person. It did not go over well. They weren't supportive then and they still aren't. And that was 17 years ago.
