Probable reasons:
1.Your firewall is blocking it.
2.Your anti-virus might be updating with Internet Explorer, but you have set some other browser (like Firefox or Opera) as your default browser. Your anti-virus cannot connect to the net if this is the case.
3.Your ISP server is heavily trafficked, so the connection might be timing out.

You have not got auto update set,your current antivirus has run out.

Make sure auto update is turned on and you firewall is set to allow full access to the Internet.

anti virus protection is free for a short period of time you need to pay for updates to keep your comp running smooth

If you paid for your anti virus maybe it has run out..it doesn't last forever.
