Salt intake triggers subsequent thirst by increasing plasma osmolality. Osmolality is the ratio of the amount of solute dissolved in a given weight of water:
solute (osmoles) / water (kilograms)
Body water can decrease as a result of deprivation or sweating, whereas solute can increase as a consequence of salt ingestion. Either water decrease or solute increase leads to an increase in osmolality and consequent thirst

The salt in the popcorn removes water from the tissues and blood vessels in the mouth and the body signals you to drink water anticipating the need to rehydrate when the rest of the salt hits the intestines. The salt content of your blood plasma increases and once the body had the sodium and chloride ions it needs, it rids the bosy of the salt through the kidneys. The blood stream uses the kidneys to maintain the plasma's ion/water balance but it can't produce extra water so the body says you are thirsty.

When you eat salty popcorn, the concentration of salt in your blood increases. That causes water to move out of certain cells (in your hypothalamus, I think, as well as out of all other cells in general) that signals your brain that you are thirsty.
Basically, your blood becomes hypertonic leading to loss of water from cells, thus making you thirsty.

Too much salt in stomach results into movement of water from blood into the stomach. This results in dehydration of body.As a result one feels thirsty(it's body's way of telling that you need water,to dilute salt in stomach,so that water can move from stomach to blood.(osmotic pressure of stomach fluid must be lower than blood to make this possible.
