Probably a little of both. My daughter had several imaginary friends when she was little. I definetly used it to my advantage, when she wanted me to play with her and I had things I needed to do, I would tell her to play with one of her imaginary friends until I finished what I was doing. Children with imaginary friends tend to be quite intelligent, don't worry. My daughter is now 15, and has been tested to be on genius level.

Being imaginative is part of healthy child growth. imaginary friends are just a part of this.
But too much of imagination too is not good. If as soon as someone comes into the room he stops talking to his imaginative friend then definitely he knows its just imagination.
But if he is ignoring the eprson and continueing with that imaginary friend of his then there might be a slight problem with him unable to differenciate between fantasy and reality.
Dont worry its not a big problem. If you are feeling something is wrong, take the child to a child psychologist. They will sort it out.

they think they are real
i once heard a story that when a child has an "imaginary" friend that they are actually talking to angels. it said that since the child was still young enough to believe and hasn't been affected by the world yet that they can do that.
in any case, my daughter had a friend when she was younger, she talked to it all the time.--she's 9 now, she's an A student, she's a friendly, happy girl and she enjoys church.---so she turned out fine.

Children have really interesting imaginations. I think that when they have an imaginary friend they are aware that it is imaginary but they feel in their heart that the friend is somewhat real.
I hope I helped!!

I think sometimes Children create another world for themselves , someone they can talk to all the time, and probably verbally hear their own thoughts. I also think it shows creativity. My son use to talk to himself all the time. Yet I also heard that Children are more intuned with the Spiritual world, cause they are innocent. So who knows right? Perhaps we are imagining they are imaginaging when it may be very well real...:o)
