The Persian owners of two rug stores told me to use dish soap and water. Start with just a bit of soap, and add more if it's not doing the job. One said that if you have a small spot to clean, put a bowl under it and pour the water onto it. letting it drip through into the bowl. I know that when they wash a whole rug at the store, they lay it down, pour the solution onto it, and rub it with soft brushes. Then they rinse by hosing it off with clear water. But if your rug is large, you will need help lifting it when it's wet!
