I never received any dividends or mailings, as this was only one share given as employee incentive. I had the certificate but can no longer find it

Sounds like you were part of an ESOP. Employee Stock Ownership Plan. One usually has to work for the company seven years before the stocks can be realized. Check with the Bookkeeping department of the company you worked for. Their period for tenure may vary. If you terminated employment with the company before their tenure period they retain the share.

Call the company's investor relations number and ask for a stock power. This will enable you to transfer this stock to a discount brokerage. Do not get the certificate b/c the certificates fees have sky rocketed and will cost you more than the stock might be worth

I think they should give you a certificate with out charging you a fee. I would call the transfer agent for the company.
