The chickens here use their wings to fly over fences . . .
Their wings are too small for their body weight to support long term / air-born flight.

They do know that they have wings and they even use them to 'fly' short distances - the problem is that they are too heavy.

They can fly (sort of, more of a gliding hop I suppose) over short distances, assuming they aren't livestock chickens being raised for food.

You've not been around chickens much, have you? Chickens fly. You have to clip their flight feathers to keep them from it.
