For classical: Mozart, Handel, Beethoven, Chopin, Bach, any of the Strauss waltzes, Tchaikovsky, Mendelssohn, and way too many more to mention.
Rock/Country Rock/Soul/Blues etc: The Beatles, The Who, Moody Blues, Dave Mason, Mamas and Papas, Jethro Tull, Allman Brothers Band, Marshall Tucker Band, Smoky Robinson and the Miracles, Gladys Knight and the Pips, The Temptations, B.B. King, The Supremes, Elvis Presley, Eric Clapton/Cream, Van Morrison, Jackson Browne, Joni Mitchell, Judy Collins, Chicago, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, The Eagles, Supertramp, Hall and Oates--for the most part, these artists have very good, often excellent melodic lines, great harmonies and intelligent lyrics.
