I would like to do some volntary work with children in the poor parts of Africa. Maybe with children with aids or something like that. I have nopticed that all the companies running these programmes are totally on th emake charging in excess of £3000!!!

Can anyone tell me where I might find a cheaper way of doing this as I only have a spare week to do this and all these expensive companies say min of 3 weeks which is not realistic if you work?

Hi SYJ

Collection money isnt really what I want to do, its more for the experience than anything. i know that might sound selfish but its something i would love to do

Hi Molly

I know it might appear that this is selfless but the reason i am wanting to go for one week is that I have not been away alone ever and the last thing I want to do is go for a month and find I hate every minute of it because I do tend to get homesick. This way I will go for a short week then mid year will go for a month or so unpaid from work.

I understand what you are saying about the children getting confussed and not learning the ropes in a week but all I want to do is observe and ands assist where possible. I am by no means going to have a 'nosey' as you put it and I think anyone who even considered doing this would need their head checking. Going to have a 'nosey' at sick adn dying children is certainly NOT something I would want to do be it a week or a month

Im not sure where you could find a cheaper place but just to say good luck and it takes a very special person to do that type of work. Good thing there is still some good people out there.

I think you need to do something like that for selfless reasons because you want to make a difference.

Seems like all going for a week would do is benefit you by giving you the experience. It would probably take that long for a volunteer out there to show you the ropes etc. Can you imagine how it would feel for the children out there if all volunteers just went for a week - they would never get to know anyone and would probably feel just part of a freak show.

Going for a week to me just seems like a holiday to have a nosy and thats not fair on the children. If you are really dedicated to help the children you need to make sacrifies yourself and take unpaid leave off work/save all your holidays in one year to have off at once/leave your job and find another one when you get back etc., so you can go for longer.

Please think about this some more and the effects on the children of you just showing up then leaving again x

It is a long way to go for a week and by the time you got somewhere to help you would be coming back again. There is little you can do in a week so why not do some fund raising here and send it to one of the charities who will be more than grateful for monetary help.

Do a TEFL course. You can travel all over the world with one, you could go to Africa and help kids by teaching them language skills. Usually TEFL teachers get subsidised travel to poorer nations.
