AMERICAN PIE

American Pie is rumored to be based on the name of the plane (A Beechcraft Bonanza) in which Buddy Holly, The Big Bopper, and Ritchie Valens were killed. It is said that the song is a tribute to Buddy Holly and commentary on how rock and roll has changed in the years since his death. Ironically, according to McLean, the song is not about Buddy Holly but was dedicated to him. The following will provide a unique look at the meaning of the lyrics Don McLean wrote over 20 years ago. Some of the interpretations are accurate, some are outlandish. Some say, this song is a history of Rock n' Roll.

Even after 30 years many questions still remained about the meaning of this enigmatic song. By far the biggest error I noticed in most approaches to interpreting American Pie was the lack of a better grounding in the historical conditions that had inspired it, often producing some fairly problematic interpretations.
