The only real reason Canada and USA are sepereate nation is because the British Empire didn't want the USA to expand north. Provences such as Nova Scotia had rebellions the same time the 13 colony swere rebelling, except the British outnumbered them.

Now the British Empire is over, USA and Canada are free. What is stopping these countrys from unifying? Most of us speak the same language (except for the Spanish and French languages in USA and Canada) and we share history, culture, and even politics.

And Canada, being apart of USA, would've meant BUSH would never have been elected. Think about it. If Canada voted against Bush in 2004 or 2000 then he wouldn't even had gotten into office!

I don't know, I'm only throwing out an idea here. I dont' expect even 1 person to agree with me. So what do you guys think?

Hopeful

Don't misunderstand me. I am extremely pro-Bush, I was simply making a point that Canada would have an enmourmous power in the elections.

First of all, Canada as a country couldn't just join the USA, it would need the support of all the provinces and the territories, which would be highly unlikely. However, If that happened, then the US congress would have to agree to let Canada become part of the US. More likely, they wouldn't let such a large region join the US as a single state, and therefore would most likely make Canada a US territory. However, this of course would make Canadians less likely to join the US in the first place. As per your question, if Canada joins the USA, Canada would no longer be a sovereign entity which would be a major con. Also, Canadians would most likely be grouped together in one state and would lose a lot of the rights that they have under the current system. All of our history and heritage would be lost, and we would be expected to adopt the US history and culture. French would probably no longer be considered an official language. Canadians would become part of country that is more faith based, and therefore, the acceptance that the minorities of Canada have become use to and which has made Canada one of the most inclusive countries in the world would most likely suffer. Some pros, Canadians would be considered part of a country which has greater bargaining position globally as well as a number of resources including a much more superior armed forces. We would be considered a large state, meaning that we would have some bargaining power in terms of getting things down, however, individual Canadian cities would most likely lose a lot in terms of federal funding cause they would no longer be so large in size. Canadians would actually get to vote for a president, and not just a member of parliament (For example, US voted to elect Obama, we didn't actually vote for Harper). We would no longer be part of the British commonwealth or the monarchy, which is something that many think is useless. A more likely situation would be the conservative rednecks in Alberta, deciding that they no longer want to share their oil revenue with the rest of Canada, and succeeding from Canada. Once they become a new country, and if the US is under the control of a republican congress and president such as it was with George Bush, then they might decide to join the US. Since the US wants to become energy independent they would happily accept Alberta as a state because of its bargaining power in terms of oil/low population.

The two countries have drifted apart so far that I simply cannot see how they could ever be reunited -- yes, reunited, because they would have been part of the same geopolitical unit (the British Empire) back in the 1700s.

In Canada, there is very little political will to do this. And in the United States, I suspect that not one in 10,000 people has given this any thought

Most of us do not want to join the US. We have a parliamentary system that makes democracy work. For example we threw out a government about a year ago, and if the current government is not careful, we'll throw them out too.

Think on how your "democracy" works. Can you throw out your president when he goes senile and makes stupid decisions? Your government no longer reflects the wishes of the people and can no longer be called a democracy. Ours does. Why would Canadians want to lose that power and be drawn into a plutocracy. Government in the US follows the wishes of the big business not the people.

How easy is it to start a new political party to shake up the existing ones to get them to start listening to the people again in the US? Much easier here in Canada.

And we were free when we were a British colony, free of Americans and their influence.

From the perspective of a Canadian, socially Canada is quite liberal and fiscally quite conservative, the complete opposite of the USA government system. Canada also currently boasts a thriving economy with no national deficit and a debt that we are currently paying off.

It makes no sense for Canada to join a nation with different political and social values especially in such prosperous times.

Canada has no wish to be "part of the USA", nor do I think there is much desire to have the USA be part of Canada either. Both countries have their separate currencies, system of government, and constitutions and in my mind it is doubtful that the two systems could ever be satisfactorily merged, meaning one (doubtlessly Canada) would have to be absorbed into the other, losing national and provincial identities in the process. Won't fly.

However, I am one Canadian who wishes we could return to the pre 9/11 levels of friendship and neighborliness and maybe we will when the paranoid opportunist currently sitting in the White House is gone - and hopefully before he gets any damn fence built.

Why would Canada wish to merge with us? We have nothing to offer them, they do not already have. A beautiful country, they have a much lower crime rate than we do, despite the fact that many Canadians own guns. They have a very multicultural country, and everyone respects each other and gets along. They are sitting on soil that has recently been discovered to contain a wealth of natural oil. Why would they need us? Canadians love their country as much as we love ours, and they love their independence just as much.
Bush is not Canada's problem, he's ours. We elected this Frankenstein, and his party, and as the voters of this country have shown (finally) we can get rid of them. It is up to us as voters to prevent idiots from entering public office. While it is easy to blame the Republican party, and they really have done a lousy
job, we have to blame ourselves most of all....we put them in a position to use and abuse us, and that's just what they did. Serves us all right.

I'm Canadian however staying in America with my boyfriend.
So I have both views on this.

Canada is very in with England. England however hates America and with reason. IF Canada becomes America we lose all ties with England which we can't really afford to do since our government etc is all based out of England. In the end Canada has to choose England or America and I honestly think we'll choose England.

Now, I wish Canada and America would just join because getting across the border has become unpleasant, unwelcoming, and just a major pain in the ***.
I love England, I love Canada and I'm starting to sort of like America....

Canada's full of American companies though, so we're pretty much American anyway.
I think let Canada join America but let us stay Canada. We take pride in being Canadian and being the country called Canada....

You talk like if that determination have to come from the American side. I know that the Canadians are very proud of their country and don't want to be part of no other country, they just want to be Canadians. Why Canada join the USA,, why not USA join Canada, it is not a good idea, we and them are different. You have to be a Liberal yourself, to think like that.
