Ha, I'm in college to teach HS math, so if you need a tutor my yahoo id is badbadboy6979. I love teaching/helping with math, so if you'd like to add me and we'll work on stuff, I'll be happy to anytime, tutoring is great practice and experience for me.

Anyway, for this one, first you need to write an equation. Gus will be G. Jorge will be J. The sum of their ages is 41.
So, we know G + J = 41, right?
For me, I solve it this way, I divide 41 by 2, and I get 21.5. then I divide 13 by 2, and get 6.5. I add 6.5 to 21.5 for gus, and subtract 6.5 from 21.5 for jorge. That leaves Jorge at 14 years old, and Gus at 27, a difference of 13 years and a combined age of 41.

Gus is 27, Jorge is 14, 14+27=41. I tried 2 find 2 digits that =ed 4 in 41. Since there is none that would b 13 years apart, i did 2 that equaled 3. 2 n 1 equaled three. In the second place, i tried 2 find 2 #s that equaled 11 so u could carry the 1 2 the 1st digit place. 7 n 4 equaled 11. i put a 2 n front of the 7 n a 1 b4 the 4 so they would be 13 years apart. That would give me 14 n 27 which equals 41. Simple right. (lol).

Let the age of jorge = x
So, the age of Gus = x+13 (Given above)
Now the sum of the ages = 41.
So, x + x + 13 = 41
2x + 13 = 41
2x = 41 - 13 = 28
x = 28/2 = 14. So
the age of jorge = 14; the age of Gus = 14+13 = 27 . Answer.

Gus = 13 years older than George
Let Gus = A,
George = B,

Thus, (A) = B +13 (1)

And A + B = 41 (2)

you have to equations and two unknowns, can be easily solved.

substitute the equation (1) into (2):
A + A - 13 = 41
2A = 54
A = 27

And B = 41 - A
= 41 - 27
= 14

Therefore: Gus is 27, George is 14

Let x = Gus's age
Let y = Jorge's age
then x = y+13 , and
x+y = 41 <-- Eq 1
Substitute y+13 for x in 2nd equation getting:
y+13 + y = 41
2y +13 = 41
2y = 28
y = 14 = Jorge's age
Sbstitute 14 for y in EQ 1 getting,
x+14 =41
x = 27 = Gus's age

Gus = 13 years older than Jorger
Total sum both of them = 41
so..
Jorger age = (41-13)/2 = 28/2 = 14
Gus age = 14+13 = 27

Set variables for what you're trying to find:
X = Gus' age
Y = Jorge's age

Then setup the equations:
1) Gus is 13 years older than Jorge.
X = Y + 13

2) Sum of their ages is 41
X + Y = 41

Now, substitute equation 1 into equation 2 so you can solve for 1 of the variables:

(Y + 13) + Y = 41
2Y + 13 = 41
2Y = 28
Y = 14

Plug this value back into equation 1:

X = (14) + 13
X = 27

ANSWER: Gus is 27 and Jorge is 14

Let Gus' age be x and Jorge's age be y.

Since, Gus is 13 years older than Jorge, adding 13 to Jorge's age will make their ages same or equal.

so, x = y +13

Again, the sum of their ages is 41 so,

x+y =41

If we put x = y +13 in the second equation we get,

y + 13 +y = 41
so 2y +13-13 = 41 -13

2y = 28
y= 14
And x= y+13 so,
x= 27

This is called substitution method where you try to eliminate one of the variable to get the answer.
