Most homeless people are that way by choice. Then there are a great number of homeless people that are mentally ill.

As for the rest of it, America is great because the idiot kids have the choice to have a PHD in drinking. If their parents have not instilled better standards in them by that age, they deserve to be alcohol blinded idiots.

Greatness compared to what ? I would imagine that you could find fault in any society in the world today. The United States of America, so far, is not a socialist society. That would mean that people are responsible for their own actions. We do not want more Government to tell us how to live and where to live and what medicine to take. We have several million people on Government controlled housing and medical. You name 4 things that are bad about America. We have many more things that are good about America that the overall picture is much brighter than you or others like you are willing to admit.

Well, some people never planned for their own retirement. Some people dont want us to protect our borders and make it difficult for those trying to do so. Some kids like drinking, its a personal choice. We have homeless people because they chose at some point not to take the necessary actions to provide for themselves.

What makes our country great is we have the opportunity to make those choices for ourselves, we are not supposed to rely on our government to build our lives for us and tell us what to do and how to do it.

If we did that we would be communists, thank God we are not, this way we can be whatever we want to be, live where we want to live, and make our own life.

Many homeless people actually want to be homeless. I work with them every day, and many of them would rather sleep in the cold, in the rain, and live out of dumpsters than have to function in society. The only thing they want to focus on is their next rock, half-pint, or 40 ouncer. I know that sounds really cruel, but it is the truth.
In L.A. the city offers cold shelters, and rain shelters, and I have seen some street people sleeping over heating exhaust vents next to the larger buildings downtown, just to keep warm. I asked one guy why he wouldn't go to the cold shelter (they take them in - no questions asked) and he said he "didn't want to be with all the nuts."
As for old people who cannot buy their meds, there are also programs for them. They just have to apply. I think there should be more volunteerism from people who are good at filling out forms, to help some of the older and disadvantaged. My husband is a tax attorney, and we do free income tax work for the elderly every year. He also helps elderly people get better social security benefits at no cost to them.

I think our people are what make this country great. Most people in this country are very giving, forgiving, and un-selfish. You just never hear about them.

I suggest, if you have a point to make, make it; rather than posing a rhetorical questions like this.

America is great because it provides opportunities to succeed. Whether to accept this opportunity and run with it or leave it is left up to the individuals. America is also (supposed to be) made up with individuals accepting their personal responsibilities as well as rights. If someone does not want to accept responsibilities, they will have to deal with consequences.

For those who prefers to blame your problems to our government (or who runs it), I suggest you carefully look at your problems and failures and see what part your government really had a hand in. You'll find, most problems are caused by you or lack of you. Stop finding a place to blame but find a way to solve it.
