They are as reliable, a bit more expensive to make and generate more heat than larger ones. They should primarily be used where space and weight is a concern, ie notebooks.

Yes. The differences are that a 2.5" drive is for notebooks and typically have speeds of 4200, 5600, but you can find 7200 which gives off more heat.
A 3.5" drive is for big box computers typical of home pc's. Typical speeds are 7200. You can find a SCSI drive that has less hdd space but can run up to 10,000.
Research and get consumer opinion on the BRAND of drives you are interested in. Some brands are notorious for not holding up for long, whereas some are more dependable.

Yep, the only difference I'm sure is the size (in inches). But the space it holds may vary, but these days that doesn't even matter. They say by next year we will hold 8 GB in a one inch memory stick. The current max is 4 GB.
