I got a serger handed down to me from my mother but I have no clue what to use it for. I know its for sewing, but thats it. Any ideas or projects that I could try to make using this?? I'd like to try it out before I throw it into the back of my closet to collect dust. thanks in advance.

You can use a serger for almost any normal seam too... it can sew quicker than a normal sewing machine, and also "binds" the edges of the two raw seams as well as (usually) cutting off the excess seam at the same time. The "binding" function is especially good for certain fabrics that are likely to ravel, or which will be exposed to a lot of wear... it can also be done on a regular sewing machine, but takes a lot longer to do.
(Take a look at the seams on almost any commerically made clothing and you'll see what a serger does, and how what it does creates a different seam than the normal seams you probably sew on your regular machine.)

A serger is used to make the neat seams on the insides of clothing. If you look at your commercial clothing, you'll see the types of seam that you will get from the serger. Most sergers can be set to cut the excess fabric off or to keep the excess fabric on.
The tricky part of using a serger is making sure you have it threaded correctly and making sure you are cutting on the right edge of the fabric.

If you sew a lot, then a serger is a great tool to have, but if you aren't into sewing, then you probably won't use it a lot.

A serger will stitch, trim and bind the raw edge of a seam which saves steps with woven fabrics.

For jersey fabrics, like t-shirt material, or stretch fabrics, a serger is essential because the seam can flex.
