Extremism is a part and parcel of Indian polity and cannot be eliminated in the present set up. However, it can be eliminated, if we take some extreme steps.
India with 2/3 political parties, can you just imagine. That's my drea - an India with one party ruling and 1/2 in the opposition. If this goal is attained, then India will be at the helm (of the world)!
It's definitely a herculean task, which is similar to the one undertaken by our Iron Man years ago to unite the princely states. In similar way, we have to unite all the small parties to come under one umbrella of their choice. At the national level, there whould be 2 or 3 parties - the Congress, the BJP (3rd one may be formed with LEFT or RIGHT). All the regional/local parties should function under the concerned lational party.
Necessary steps are required to be taken to amend/modify the Constitution. I don't know any national level dabate has been carried out in this connection. If not, then it is the right time to act on this, and once implemented, the so-called extremism will automatically disappear..

Its not extremism in politics. Its simply polarization, as two groups who feel that their ideas alone will be best for their country continually attack each other in the political arena. This sort of thing has been going on for centuries

I think we need extremism. Don't forget, these people rarely stay in office long. Look at Rick Santorum from PA. People got sick of his extreme right wing politics and kicked him out. Extremists on both sides give normal people a chance to see how silly some ideas sound, and let us all meet somewhere in the middle to compromise. Thats what makes democracy work...a free flow of ideas.
