I have been vacationing in Venice Florida my whole life. I think that I have done it all.
1.Of course there is always the beach. Spend at least one afternoon at Siesta Key’s White Beach. It is truly amazing. If you want to stay there for dinner, there are some great restaurants like Turtles (http://www.frommers.com/destinations/sarasota/D40740.html), and Coasters. Coasters is on the road on your way over to Siesta Key. http://www.coastersrestaurant.com/
There are also some great restaurants within walking distance of the beach. I once had a fantastic Margaritta at a restaurant very close to the beach. I am sorry I don't remember the name.
2.I also went to the Barnum Museum. There is also a wonderful little restaurant on the property. (kid friendly) http://www.ringling.org/circus_museum.asp
3.I would also recommend Mote Marine. It is near St. Armands Circle. (Great Shopping at St.Armands. http://www.visitstarmandscircle.com/) There is a really neat restaurant on the water near the corner on your way to Mote. I am sorry I can’t remember the name of it. You will see it on your left as you turn onto the road that Mote is on. www.mote.org
4.Across the parking lot from Mote is a Pelican Sanctuary… very neat.
5.If you want to drive a little farther Busch Gardens is a great day. They have a wonderful kids area. (You can also get a free beer in the beer tasting building.)
6.Sarasota Jungle Gardens is also a great time. Take a stroller. There is a lot of walking. http://www.sarasotajunglegardens.com/index2.html
7.If you want to drive a little farther I would recommend Cypress Gardens. The water shows are fantastic. Your kids might get bored though. http://www.cypressgardens.com/welcome.asp
8.I would also suggest checking into local festivals and fairs. The Sarasota County fair is a blast. My 5-year-old daughter loves the Pig Races.
It is a wonderful area. I am sure you will have a fantastic time with your family.

I go to that area all the time! The Mote Aquarium is really nice. The Homes Beach is one of the greatest beaches ever! The have a restaurant on the beach that serve the greatest waffles and grilled cheeses there. The Mote Aquarium is the best place I have listed here. They have a giant squid and sharks and all that stuff.

The Mote Marine Aquarium is pretty neat and not too expensive. Good Luck.
