Helmet, because the law and safety requires it.
That's the 'must' part of it. Now to the recommended part, for your safety and protection of skin:
Clothing that is reinforced at elbows and knees or a leather jacket and leather trousers.
Mid-calf (minimum) length strong boots with strong leather at the ankles.
Leather gloves
That will help you if you have a spill of any kind.
Then to the bits to keep you warm:
A good scarf because the join between helmet and jacket is very cold
A clear visor or good goggles on your helmet, because flies in the face aren't funny!
A light waterproof suit to put over your leathers in case of the rain.
And that's about it.

Legally, just an approved helmet and visor.
Most riders also rate gloves as the next most important thing after the helmet, followed by a good leather jacket, boots and trousers. The more conspicuous and water proof the better.
Things that aren't advised to wear are shorts and T shirts, and anything with long laces as they tend to get caught in things.

as a biker of 30 plus years standing the things you should wear are first of all a good strong helmet then a good set of leathers a good pair of leather gloves a good solid pair of boot and a good idea is a reflective over jacket most of theses are just common sense the only one that is compulsory in the UK is the crash helmet. I hope this is of help to you. it is not a good idea to wear t shirt and shorts even if you are only going a short way just think what sliding down the road can do to your skin

definate 'do not wear': bikini's, sandles, shorts, tank tops, dresses, tennis shoes, t-shirts. if u have any of these on and go down, u will learn a new definition of pain.

what to wear: over the ankle boots with non slip soles, leather gloves. at the very minumum, jeans. having chaps over them would help more but they dont protect the 'seat'.
high quality leather jacket with armor added at strategic locations; elbows, forearms, shoulders.
as far as helmets...use only d.o.t. certified. novelty helmets are totally worthless. order of protection from best to not so good: full face, 3/4 with face shield, half shell. avoid tinted visors especially on bikes with no windshield. always have on quality mc goggles or glasses.

Think you've got the general idea for the previous replies. I'd just add a tinted visor as a "no-no", you can always wear shades under a clear one and take them off if it gets dark, but you're stuck with the visor.

Look up the term motorcycle "Squid" and that will explain how not to ride or dress. All good riders wear equipment that protects them in case of a crash. As a RIDER you have to prepare for the worse case scenario.

I ride my superbike (race bike) with:
-Full helmet (DOT Snell approved)
-Full leathers (jacket and pants or 1 piece race suit)
-1 Piece race suit built with leather, seams reinforced, CE padding, fits like a glove. A race suit should fit tight to act as second skin.
-Race back protector- Used to pad the spine and limit torsion.
-Full race leather gloves, Kevlar (bulletproof vest material) reinforced with carbon fiber.
-Full race boots, built to protect my ankle and foot for the worst crash scenario.

My riding gear has set me back close to $3000 dollars. My life and body are worth it!

Some guys give me crap and laugh when I wear my race gear in the local canyons. I laugh at them when they crash and are wearing jeans tennis shoes and tanktops!

Riding to the corner store I wear my leather jacket, gloves and helmet, at the minimum.

Inadequate safety gear or lack of safety gear increases injury and possibility of death.

Helmet - to protect face and head
Leathers - to protect against scrape injuries if in accident and slide across ground
Boots - to protect lower leg and ankles
Gloves to protect hands

What not to wear

Anything long enough to catch into brake pedals (long scarves) or chain

MP3 players or the like - that block hearing
T-Shirts - Fall off and much ouchness!

My dad grow to be merely such as you, purely he grow to be somewhat greater strict. It grow to be defined that on a similar time as he could truly like for me to love him each and all of the time, he could a lot fairly understand that i could become clever approximately probably risky situations, and secure. He grow to be consistently asserting that i grow to be his first precedence, and that it is not appropriate what different young babies get to do. In each and every communication, he could end it by skill of asserting, "i'll consistently love you adequate to permit you hate me for a on a similar time as!" and that i'm so happy he stayed genuine to his be conscious!
