When my son was in kindergarten I went to pick him up from after school care. I was a single mom at the time and working many hours. I opened the door to the child care and there he was standing proudly with a piece of yarn dangling from his neck. Attached to the yarn was red and yellow construction paper that he had drawn pictures of the two of us on, and the words "Happy Birthday Mommy" "I love You" "Jonathan". It shocked me that he was even aware it was my birthday. The workers said that he had hurried in after school and asked for the materials, then started to make his sign. I still have that sign, hanging off his kindergarten picture.

When someone said it to me for the first time. I could tell it was tough for them, but they said it and it felt so good. I just hope she knows how much it meant to me.
