Why do British football fans sing the Fields of Athenry on the terraces. Do they not know its about a poor fella called Michael who was carted off to Australia by the british for stealing food to feed his starving family during the famine!!

Celtic fans sing it and believe me they know all about it, most can trace an ancestor or two who had little to thank Mr Trevelyan for. The Liverpool fans sing it, many of them are or Irish descent too. The Jews will not forget the holocaust in 100 years, the Irish do not forget their holocaust either

I don't know, but its a damn good song when sung by the Dropkick Murphys.
Maybe the Brits sing it to taunt the Irish, since it was them who shipped many Irish off to Australia.
Wikipedia had this...."The fans Of Liverpool Football Club sing along to the song chnging the lyrics to, 'Anfield Road'."

I'm not from the UK, so I don't know much about the topic, but I hope I helped a little.

Isn't it just mindless sectarianism and very few of those singing actually know what it's about?
