Figure how much this party would cost if you DID do it then instead, take him shopping for something he really loves and spend that amount on him. Let him pick whatever it is out and you pick up the tab.

Then take him to lunch and enjoy TIME spent with him.

Parties are NOT for everyone... But spending time with someone you love is wonderful.

A nice dinner (can be at home or at a restaurant, whichever he likes best), a special present (doesn't have to be very expensive, something he'll really like & can get good use out of is often more important than monetary value), and just being there with him will probably work.
A good gift for such a special year may be something like a picture/memories book, something to look back on, although some may also think that 50's too young for that, and this is more for 65 or even 75.

Is there a comedy club in your area? Maybe a fun night out getting a few laughs.

Or maybe a traveling dinner. Find 3 good restaurants in town. Have appetizers at one, dinner at another, then head to a third for dessert. (Do NOT try this on a Friday night)

Does he like movies? Rent a few of the Oscar 'Best Film' nominees from the year he was born. Stock up on his favorite junk food and enjoy.

If there's any good Go Kart tracks near you, that's also a blast.

Just about all men that turn 50 say they don't want a party but they do like to be honored on this special birthday, so if your dad doesn't want a big party then keep it small but get him a gift certificate to his favorite store. Have fun.

Cook dinner for him on his birthday, and eat at home with the whole family and invite his best friends.
