Hi, I am a Co-Mason. Yes, we do admit women and men, of all races, who are 21 years of age or older, who are of good report, who are tolerant of religions not their own, who wish to improve the world by improving themselves.
Co-Masonry has been around since the 1890s, started in France, and now is world-wide. We tend to put more emphasis on improving the inner life and less on the socializing aspect. We keep to rituals that the masculine rites have "simplified" and thus have lost.
We do have a goodly number of masculine rite Masons who have joined our ranks. They were searching for more and have found it within Co-Masonry.
Be aware that some of the masculine rite folks have very strange ideas about Co-Masonry. Some object to our admitting women to what they see as an all male institution. That is sad; we would like to be able more to show them we are strictly governed and very Masonic in all that we do (except admitting women).
If I can be of further service, feel free to write to me. The link below gets you to more information.

Because it's a boy's club...like the ones they used to show on The Little Rascals. The He-Man Woman-Haters Club. Seriously, the Freemasons (and my father was one) were formed to bring men of power together, form a special bonding between them, and since men had all the power... Now, there are some non-mainstream Masonic bodies that do admit women, such as Co-Freemasonary which was founded in France in the late 1800's. They aren't recognized by any of the regular orders, however, because regular Masonic orders believe that it would break the "ancient Masonic landmarks" or principles. If it sounds confusing, well, it's meant to.

It's just because that's the tradition and they like it that way. Early stonemasons were all male. When the Freemasons began, women did not join fraternal organizations like that because it was the way society was. No reason other than tradition at this point.

There are two types of masonry. There is traditional masonry, which is for men only and they go by traditional Masosnic values. There is also a second type of masonry called Co-Masonry. Co-Masonry is open to both men and women. They don't go by exactly the same values but, it's close. I hope this helped.

basically tradition as others have said but for other reasons as well. there are times when men need to be by themselves to be men and ladies to be by themselves to be ladies. then there are times when both need to be together.
