If you have Windows 2000 then it is unlikely you have USB 2.0 which means a USB adapter will be rather slow. Hence, I recommend purchasing a Network Interface Card. This is a PCI card with an Ethernet port on it.

You can pick up a good Belkin one at PC World for as little as £6.99. If you know how to, install it yourself but if you are unsure, then ask a specialist or get it fitted in-store.

If you have one, make sure it is enabled in device manager. If it is, connect the Ethernet cable and then restart the computer. It should recognise a LAN connection.

I had the same problem with networking, a 10/100 lan card was what I ended up with.

you mean there isn't a LAN input in your computer- in that case, you'll need to buy a LAN add-on card (only about 10$) or buy a wireless router and buy a USB wireless adapter.
