I haven't done this for 15 years, so I might have forgotten details:
On the inside of the wing near the middle joint there is a superficial vein. You have to remove some of the feather-fuzz to access it, but you can basically pull that away and it doesn't seem to bother them much. Smear the site with vaseline, put pressure on the vein on the heart side to block flow and allow the vein to bulge. Then puncture the vein with a large guage needle (16-18G). The blood will drip and bead on the vaseline, where you can collect it with a vial or syringe. When you release the pressure, the blood will stop flowing, and it will heal very quickly. You will only get 1/2 ml or so, but with a 1 day old chick, that's probably a good chunk of their blood supply.
Cardiac puncture is an option, but its hard to do and, in our lab anyway, you have to kill the animal afterwards, as its so invasive. Jugular vein - I hope its more superficial than a rat's tailvein! Hitting a tiny vein and actually getting blood are two different things. I can hit the vein every time, but no matter how gently I draw back on the syringe, the valves prevent backflow and I get NOTHING!
Good luck!

Blood can be collected from one day old chicks directly from heart. But this results into about 15% mortality.
More safe way is to collect blood from Jugular vein.Clip down feathers from neck, rub some alcohol and collect blood directly from vein.Chicks survive this very well.
