I'm not sure actually. Maybe the title made an impact since you know... Stairway to Heaven is a powerful title

Backwards lyrics!
Oh here's to my sweet Satan.
The one whose little path would make me sad, whose power is Satan.
He'll give those with him 666.
There was a little toolshed where he made us suffer, sad Satan.
Also:
In 1982, a consumer protection committee of the California State Assembly held a hearing on the song. Several "experts" claimed that "Stairway to Heaven," when played backward, contains a message:
I sing because I live with Satan.
The Lord turns me off -- there's no escaping it.
Here's to my sweet Satan, whose power is Satan.
He will give you 666. I live for Satan.
—Alleged lyrics to Stairway to Heaven played backwards, from the 1982 California State Assembly hearing

They supposedly used backmasking, so if you play the lyrics:
If there's a bustle in your hedgerow, don't be alarmed now,
It's just a spring clean for the May queen. Yes there are two paths that you can go by, but in the long run theres still time to change the path you're on...
Backwards you get:
Oh here's to my sweet satan, the one whose little path would make me sad who's power is satan. He'll give those with him 666, there was a little toolshed where he made us suffer sad satan...
the band claim it as unitentional, however.

It was stated that when the song was played backwards it had Satanic messages. Also it was mentioned that it was and ploy by a failing electronic company to get teenagers to ruin their turntables by playing the record backwards. So who knows. I think it still one of the greatest rock songs of all time.

First of all, its long, which = epic.
Secondly, it covers a wide range. Starts as a soft ballad, then builds to a crazy hard rock song, before returning to its roots.
Thirdly, it has the lyric "if there's a bustle in your hedgerow", which just sounds cool.

There was something that was stated that if you played it backwards it had a satanic message. That and then the fact that the radiostations played the hell out of it.

I don't know about playing it backwards...but it was written and recorded after his son fell from a high window and died.
