I need to find the definition for the prefix vale- for my daughter's homework. Any suggestions on where to find it?

That's a tough word to find. I looked on various prefix websites and couldn't find it, so looked up a word that begins with "vale". It appears to be a Latin prefix:
In the United States and Canada, the title of valedictorian (an anglicized derivation from the Latin vale dicere, "to say farewell") is given to the top graduate of the graduating class (the Australia/New Zealand equivalent being dux) of an educational institution.

In geography a vale is a wide river valley, usually with a particularly wide flood plain or flat valley bottom. Vales commonly occur between the scarp slopes of pairs of chalk downs, where the chalk dome has been eroded, exposing less resistant underlying rock, usually clay.
