The internet is public and insecure. It is very easy to trace people through the internet, though it is relatively rare. Often people are traced when they download or upload something they shouldn't (such as illegal music or child pornography), but I imagine they may also be traced when applying for something over the internet if it looks suspicious enough.

Once you make a connection your IP address can be logged. From that they could potentially trace it back if your ISP cooperates with them. So could it be traced, it is certainly possible. . The internet is not nearly as anonymous as so many people believe.

It's possible, particularly if the ISP is served with a court order to disclose the details. They won't otherwise. There are other ways too, for the clever of this world... I'm told.
