An former teacher defined it as self worth. Basically what you think about yourself. However I have heard people use the analogy of a bucket of water. When somebody causes a person to think less of themself the bucket is knocked over and water is spilled. When someone does something to increase confidence ie compliment water is added.

Confidence is knowing yourself better than anyone else. It is the ability to be "okay" with who you are. Confidence gives you the courage to stand up and do what is right. it is the realization that you are an essential part of the universe. That, my friend, is confidence.
