Portsmouth vs Southampton
The South Coast Derby is played between the two biggest clubs on the Southern Coast of England. Both, Portsmouth and Southampton are based in the English County of Hampshire and lie 17 miles apart from eachother.
Portsmouth supporters often refer to Southampton supporters as "Scum," or "Scummers," an epithet since adopted by supporters of a number of other clubs when referring to their local rivals. According to Portsmouth fans, the "scum" actually developed out of an acronym standing for 'Southampton City Union Men.' Southampton supporters have taken to referring to their local rivals as "Skates". This is a derisive term used to describe sailors, as Portsmouth is the home of the Royal Navy.
The acrimonious departure of Harry Redknapp from Portsmouth to Southampton brought the bitter rivalry to a new level. When Redknapp would again return to Portsmouth in November of 2005 following Southampton's relegation, it only added to sour relations between the clubs. There has also been public criticsm between the chairmen of the clubs and Milan Mandaric, former Portsmouth chairman sent Rupert Lowe, former Southampton chairman, a Christmas present of a boxed duck - a gesture which only furthered the animosity between the two. Portsmouth have had the upper hand in the rivalry as of late, as they remain in the top flight of the football pyramid, whilst their rivals play in the league below, The Championship.

So interesting to hear both sides of the story, it is to do with the dockers and the Scummers broke the picket lines not because of this great country, because they wanted to get extra money. Anyone that breaks a picket line is always looked down on and that is why there is hostility but only one way, Pompey people hate Scummers, the Scummers don't care about Pompey people too much as they believe they are better.
It is one of the very few football rivalries that is mainly a city rivalry and not centred around football. The Skates stuff is made up, they do call Pompey people skates but that's only because they had to make something up because Pompey had a derogatory term for them.
Portsmouth is a working class area whereas Southampton traditionally isn't and that is why Portsmouth fans are considered far more passionate about their club because it is a central part to their lives whereas for Southampton fans, it isn't.

ok ok...enough of all the speculation.
The reason is simple, yes it was down to WW2, and the picket lines, Southampton was a merchant port, and we needed help delivering footstuff to the Country in the time of War. We broke the picket lines, for the reason only of feeding our great country, hence the name Scummers......However, I would rather be a scummer than a skate lover. The men who were in the Navy based in Portsmouth, didnt think much of the local "tarts" in the area, so to save money, used the Fish called SKATE....with a large mouth......thats all im gonna say, coz im sure you can work it out where they put their dipstick.....Then with the crap with Harry Rednapp. One of your reply suggests Pompey are winning that, yeh right, they have been in the premiership for three seasons now, have been at the bottom and only just escaped relegation for two seasons, and are doing ok, even though they are sliding down now......We....Southampton were in the Premiership / old div 1 for 27 years.....doesnt really compare does it. And with certain promotion for this year....next season we will see who the best team on the South Coast is. Oh When the SAINTS.....go marching in......oh when the SAINTS go marching in..... i wanna be in that number, when the SAINTS go marching in. SOUTHAMPTON

I was born in Portsmouth and only found this out recently myself. It isn't simply just about a local derby but goes back to WW2 - Southampton is the main home of the UK Merchant fleet, Portsmouth that of the Royal Navy. Those from Southampton blamed those from Portsmouth for those they lost in the North Atlantic convoys as the Royal Navy was supposed to be protecting those on Merchant vessels from the German U-Boats. Hence the reason Southampton fans refer to Pompey supporters as "skates" - a derogatory term for Royal Navy seamen.

mine works fine: nice made up story.
it dates back to a dockers strike in southampton.
the shipyard employed dockers from portsmouth to break the picket lines, hence being called "scummers". and thats were the hatred comes from.
late 1800's early 1900's i would have to research to get you a date.

Because they are so close together geographically, there has always been arguementa about which team is the best on the south coast. Much like Man city/united, Liverpool/Everton and Arsenal/Tottenham

Local rivalry, dockers strike, prob a bit of jealously from us while the scum were doing better. It is intense and causes all sorts of grief. Missing them in the premiership though because you can't beat a local derby.
