A six-letter word?
It's not helium -- our sun *produces* helium from hydrogen fusion, but helium doesn't light up the sun. Once it starts to fuse helium the end of our sun is near (about 4 billion years or so from now).
How about "fusion"?

What lights up the sun is the fusion of hydrogen to form helium.
So I guess it must be "FUSION"as it is the only 6-letter word.
