I'm not a mom, but i'm an auntie. Depends on what your kid likes - if he likes elmo then go for it! You could do a theme from a TV programme he likes, a whole disney theme where the guests come dressed up. (You can get loads of little disney outifits and they arent too expensive) If you really like elmo, you could do a seseme street theme. Its not a massive issue if hes only 1 but it would be nice if it was what he liked. :)

You can look on Ebay for party themes and you can get them fairly cheap! There is also a catalog called Oriental Trading Company that sells the party themes! They both have Backyardigans on their sites! That would be a very Cute theme for a 1st birthday party. I know my oldest daughters first b-day was a teddy bear theme that said baby's first birthday, and my youngest daughters was Barney. GOOD LUCK!!!
Hope this helps!

Ask him. Take him to the party section at a store & show him the different characters he can choose from. To be honest though- he won't care at all. Gooey cake, wrapping paper to shred, and all the empty boxes? Elmo just can't compete with that.

The Wiggles are very big right now.
Everyone could wear a colored shirt to represent their favorite Wiggle.
Toy guitars could be given as party favors.
You might even have someone show up in one of the character costumes from the show.
Sing Wiggles songs, dance and have a blast.
This should work well for guests of all ages.

Does he watch cartoons? maybe pick one of them. "Blues Clues" would be a good theme too. But Elmo is also a good theme for a little one.

Whatever you like! He won't really notice.
We're going with the Baby Einstein's" baby's 1st birthday theme.
