From my understanding of history, he was not directly responsible. And Hoover was not a "typical Republican"

Companies were over inflating their own values, too many people were buying on margin and when the news that the stocks were worthless every one went in to debt.

you saw that happen at the end of the 90's on a smaller scale with the Internet crash.

a lot of companies who were pretty much worthless financially, sold tons of stock for millions of dollars then suddenly every one realized there was nothing holding up the system. it fell in on its self and people lost millions.

Hoover, however did not help with his policies, he kept the government out of aiding the people and that kept the depression going for years.
