It is not selfish. Politics is power. To get in power, you cannot be generous. You fight your fight. It is a regular contest, like a tennis match. You use your skills to defeat the oponent. Coming back to the tennis match. Do you think it practical for one player to be unselfish and give up the game to the other. All's fair in love and war.

All politicions have their personal agenda. They have to stand for something so what better than their own best interest? Even the ones who generally enter on a broader interest level turn to the far side due to the environment that already exists. Eventually it becomes a fight for survival and thus the corruption hops aboard. It is evident from Municipal, County, State, and Federal status. We supposedly vote to place the best candidate's in office, but sometimes the choices are the lesser of two evils to begin with. It probably is not going to change much either.

When survival becomes more uncertain, the selfish instinct dominates more.
The so called 'decent' people in a city become animal like violent and there is a dog fight, when there is a water shortage for say 6 days, and the distribution is through a queue at the street, from a Truck tanker!
The politicians depend on continued popularity for survival, and will do anything to survive, since popularity is a volatile thing.

We have selfish environment everywhere and we need to overcome this trait to make real progress. The process for people to enter politics should be made more stringent and minimum qualification for each post should be specified too, to keep pace with the changing times.

Politics are all about Self-Preservation! Meaning that politicians are generally just trying to get the keys to the mansion on the hill. Once they've achieved that goal it's just a matter of paying off the right people so that the locks never get changed.

Because politicians are there because they have a need for adoration and power. They woo whatever part of society they need to to keep on getting elected whether it's in our best interest or not. And besides that, we have opposing ideas in society. One faction thinks what's happening is selfish--- the other does not. Competing for control-- you see that everywhere in nature! In the animal world, even among plants. That's just nature. Too bad!
