REM is rapid eye movement.

Sleep in a night is divided into 3-4 stages and you start dreaming in the last stage of sleep . This is when your eyeballs starts moving as you dream.Hence the stage is called Rapid eye movement stage.

I am unaware about Hypnogogic

The hypnogogic stage occurs in stage 1 of sleep. During this period it is possible to hallucinate. However it is not a true dream. A true dream occurs during the last stage of sleep, rapid eye movement, or rem.

Hypnogogic is when you start to see lots of flashing colours and images that are distorted and a bit illogical. REM is rapid eye movement which is where your most vivid dreams come to the plate.

The former occurs at the borderline between waking and sleep, whereas you have to be asleep for some considerable time before REM sleep happens.
