He always was fighting off some sickness for most of his childhood. There were not many cures for the basic diseases as there are today, so he was quarantined most of his childhood from friends and family. Spending many years in your life thinking that you were going to die has a bad effect on one's mind. Later, because came from a semi rich family, he was married off to a very pretty woman. I think they were a reflection of his own self-image. Edgar Alan Poe was orphaned by the death of both of his parents when he was three years old. He was an alcoholic and died at the age of 40. He was found, unconcious on a Baltimore street and died of "congestion of the brain".

Not all his stories are all that gloomy. I can recall having read his short story -- The angel of the odd, 1844 -- and laughed.

Now, if you feel depressed by Poe's writings, you'd certainly hate reading Howard Phillips Lovecraft.

Edgar was an alcoholic most of his life. In his depressed state of mind, he used his writing genius to relay his mood.

Some said he died of alcohol poisoning, but tests later revealed he died of rabies (hydrophobia).

Nevermore.
