I've never been too successful at this before but it's a great job opportunity. 3-4 nights a week. Other than a homeschooled teenager I have no other life/responsibility at the moment that could interfere. I know I need a 6-hour block of sleep for it to count, physically, as sleeping. What do you do?

I don't have a problem with light (thank goodness or I'd be SOL there's a sliding glass door next to my bed!) Noises won't be a problem either I am mostly looking for what works best for people who have been there (done that!). I love the tip on working out before coming home, that will go a long way.

hmmm, when I worked nights, I liked to go to the gym as soon as I got off work, get my exercise and helped me unwind before bed. Then I would go to sleep right away.
That would leave me awake when businesses are open, when I could run errands, contact banks, etc.
In your case though, I think the most important consideration is when your home schooled teenager is available. If he/she works in the afternoons/evenings, then you might wanna make sure you spend time with him/her before you go to bed. In that case you wouldn't want to go to bed until later in the day.
Basically I guess, when I worked nights it was all about scheduling my sleep around the needs of my friends, family, and responsibilities. I found the right schedule for that, and I know you will as well.
Good luck and congratulations on the great job!

I would go home from work at 7am, have a decent meal and wind down.

Then go to bed and sleep for about 7 hours. You should be up around 4pm. Do homeschooling and have dinner together before going to work again at 11pm.

Clear as mud?

I used to work graveyard 11-7. I slept from about 10 to 4. (I got a sleep mask, dark window shades, and ear plugs)
