That is a tough one. It has taken me years of practice to even learn how to get them engage in a conversation. Smile, crack jokes, talk about something they love to talk about. Get the wall down first. Once they are relaxed with you and not all serious and stubborn-like than ask them other things. Sometimes, although I know it's not the best answer, if they have had a couple of drinks in them they may loosen up a bit too. I've always found the joking around and making fun of a situation helps out any personality type.

I agree with shelly.....ignore the person for a while and then they will get the message. It's difficult for someone thats stubborn not to want to make a noise at some point!

be stubborn yourself...don't say a word then wait for them to talk...it works for me

Become a good listener and talk to them about things they would want to talk about... Like if they are sports addicts talk to them about sports or whatever subjects interest them.

i find writing them a letter sometimes helps, start with positve comments about them,eg tell them how much you love them, and when you have had your say invite them to respond in a letter, they may find this better to start with and should feel easier talking to you eventually
