Warren Spahn had a good year but he also had 103 earned runs allowed, 4th most that year. But he did face more batters than anyone else. I would say Sal Maglie was the best that year. He was second in ERA (2.93), wins (23) and winning percentage (79.3%) games started (37) compleete games (22). And led the league giving up only 7.67 hits per 9IP. Plus he was third in total innings (298) and strikeouts (146).

How about Ellis Kinder (Red Sox) who was 23-6 with a 3.36 ERA and a league-leading 14 saves as a starter-reliever?

I would say Bob Feller who went 22-8 with Cleveland that year. They did not start awarding the Cy Young until 1956 .

Well there was no Cy Young award in that time, I looked at the leaders for ERA, K's, and wins, and I'd say Sal Maglie had the best season. He had a 2.93 ERA (2nd), 23 wins (1st), and 146 K's (3rd), he finished fourth in MVP voting.
