This idea was actually offered by Dinah on another question that I asked. She suggests purchasing a large peice of land, barracading it off so that no one can escape, building housing on it and sending every prisoner in the country there. (Separating the sexes) There would be no laws or law enforcement. They would be free to do whatever to whoever.
That's her idea, but I wouldn't send a slight offender there, only the bad ones.
I think it would be hell on earth and we'd have people thinking twice before they commit crimes unlike nowadays, when they get taken care of, they get better medical benefits than most of us get and free education and recreational activities in prison. It would also cut down on our costs of supporting them and guarding them.

To Lauri K - that was the idea, to let them fend for themselves. All we tax payers would pay for was the land or island as some suggested.

To Shaka - Wow, that's really drastic! Does anyone remember what soylent green was? It was an old Charleton Heston movie where there was no more food in the world so everyone ate this green stuff and he broke into the factory and found out it was made from people's dead body's.

Welcome to Australia mate.
Well, the idea would be truly inhumane. If we knew that torture and murders and rapes and horrible things were going to happen and we organized a solution that openly allowed this, then we are truly just as guilty as the offenders.
If someone were on the street dying, and we left them there to die without helping them, could be chargeable as 3rd degree manslaughter for not taking reasonable means to help them, calling an ambulance for example.
That situation is no different. All it takes for evil to triump is for good to sit back and do nothing.
I do agree that the prison system is in a shambles, that we waste precious resources on those who deserve it least, and that those who go in generally come out worse than when they went in.
I just don't think sanctioning rape, murder, and torture is a moral solution.

Uh, basically you just decribed a maximum security prison without guards. Prisons are actually a major part of our economy, employing a lot of people that would have to retool and seek new employment under a no-guard, no anything system. There would be a huge economic impact on the food suppliers as well. All of the savings would be lost in unemployment and agricultural subsidies. Another problem would be deciding who are the really "bad" ones and who are not. The next time someone tells you that prisons are havens of good medical care, education and recreational activities, you may want to check one out. Most prison are already pretty much hells on earth. Finally, just where would you build this prison and just how would you get all those prisoners there?

Living in prision used to be but is no longer free. Once they are
released they are billed for everything, right down to the tooth paste they use! Yes, sending them to an Island THEY COULDN'T
GET OFF OF sounds like a good idea but, that was already tried
with Alcatraz. There are reports of people getting off that Island! Although some were never found how do we know their escape wasn't a success?

Others right here have published large concepts.... Decriminalize entertainment marijuana use and allow it to be legally retailed and taxed. i might in basic terms approximately pass as far as to declare decriminalize the regular public of medicine....yet there are multiple different criminal and social components that ought to opt to be addressed if this have been finished that I won't get into right here. Legalizing marijuana does no longer require lots criminal and social variations someplace else, for this reason it may be a reasonably rapid and elementary first step. different victimless crimes additionally must be decriminalized and, while ideal, taxed and controlled. people who're no longer relatively a threat to society easily do no longer could be utilising up tax funds and penal complex area....and the added tax funds to be won by using legalizing those movements easily isn't a unfavourable. Create "inmate" militia battallions (with sufficient psych examinations for all applicants) that still be certain the needed point of risk-free practices for those persons, yet additionally the two places those inmates into effective use and teaches them the numerous constructive values the militia often does (self-discipline, duty, etc.). This journey might additionally help them to acquire skills and open doorways to opportunities they in any different case does no longer have, for this reason it ought to probable avert destiny violations while they are released, in turn having a constructive effect on destiny overcrowding. provide up utilising tax funds to make existence much less complicated for those being punished. as a replace of extensive entertainment rooms and areas, installation greater cells the place those rec rooms are (greater cells = much less overcrowding), or as a replace of rec rooms and gymnasiums and such have libraries and lecture rooms (make it depressing = reasonable risk they gained't return). think of of how lots relief our penal complex platforms might take transport of by using in basic terms those few concepts.....

No, I think they should be sent to Sheriff Joe Arpaio's tent prison in Maricopa County, (Phoenix), Arizona. They all have to wear pink underwear and flip flops as well as black and white striped prison uniform.
They get a sack meal of a piece of fruit, bologna, and a drink. No fancy meals or cooks there !
The prisoners are also without air conditioning, and frills such as porno magazines and television.
Arpaio needs to run prisons all across the country in my opinion!

okay...who's going to pay for this land...who's going to pay for the buildings...do we teach them to farm, raise cattle, etc., or just leave them there to figure life out for themselves?
I, as a tax payer don't feel we should have to support any criminal in any way, shape or form. Perhaps we could find some kind of penal colony, like England did centuries ago (Australia) and send all the criminals there. Let them fend for themselves then.
okay...just how many people want to continue to support these criminals? Do you have any idea how much it would cost to purchase the land, build it securely enough, and with what kind of barriers?

I was locked in jail four times, each time i didn't even get close to being guilty of a thing.convicted 3 times, thirty day sentences, for nothing I did wrong at all.,a guy in-the local jail was put in with a ***** who had JUST killed someone, that night he got the guy and with him hollering he slammed a pen up his nose and killed him.his man had only gotten in jail for not paying a Small fine from a traffic ticket and DIED.
They should do that with the illegals though.two years in a vast tent city in the desert, with high Walls with people who will shoot to kill if the tried to escape, yes, now that's a good idea Y'all.and they need to put violent people in solitaire. In the jails in this country, most people are there because they didn't pay child support in South Carolina any way.just decent people mostly who could not pay it.not didnt wont to pay it, my friend lost HIS LEG, and couldn't work and they locked him up.and stop putting people in jail for doing natural things like smoking pot.and eating mushrooms, they never hurt me when I was young. But your right in a way,Prehaps just go ahead and Put all violent people together and let them go for it.

This would only make a bad problem worse. People are sent to prison with the idea that they can be reformed and eventually brought back into society. This idea would not do that.

Improve the morals of Americans by means of sprituality and education. Most Americans lived in broken homes and lost the sense of family and values in my opinion. Everything is $$$$ and success and family comes third on the list if not at all.
