When using girl as a plural possessive which is the correct use of the apostrophe? I'm specifically look for use as applied to retail merchandise; i.e. "girls dresses." I've checked various sources and find different answers.

Please include the source for your answer.

For stock purposes use "girls dresses". The "girls" do not have ownership yet. "Girls" is a description of the type of dresses.
If you were talking about a specific group of girls who had more than one dress you then would use "girls' dresses.

Girls- the plural of " Girl" Example: The girls went shopping for clothes.

Girl's- the possesive singular, as in The girl's bike was new.

Girls' - the possessive plural, as in The girls' purses all were black.

No specific source except every English grammar text book I ever used in school.

It was a practice problem on the STAR tests every year for like 5 years in a row. The actual problem was:
The boys' bikes were stolen. But same applies to girls.

i believe girls is the plural form of the noun girl as in "two girls", girl's is the possessive form of the singular girl as in "this is the girl's handkerchief", girls', on the other hand, is the possessive form of the plural form of girl which is girls as in "i like the girls' dresses here in your boutique."

Firefly above is correct. For the purpose you want, use "Girls Dresses".

Girls is "more than one girl." (plural in other words)
Girl's means it BELONGS to one girl
Girls' means it BELONGS to "more than one girl"
