Go in a crowded store--Purchase many things-check out in long lines--go to your car to unload it, and when you do you find a small item that you know you forgot to pay for. Would you go back in the busy store to pay for it, or could you just go on?

It has happened to me and I have returned it and payed for it but the sad thing was the poor cashier got in trouble, something I never intended. Next time if it ever happened I would go in without the receipt and pay for the item.
I also paid for food at a Denny's on a road trip with a $50 and the cashier gave me the $50 plus the price of the meals as change. I actually had to explain to her why it was incorrect???

I've done this a few times -- found something on the bottom of the basket that nobody saw. Each time I finished loading up my groceries and trudged back into the store to pay for the item. Not to do so is called stealing. Each time the cashier was SHOCKED that I would return to pay for the item. I think that's a sad statement of our society today.

Yea I would. It's happened to me and the store (Tesco's) were so impressed they gave it me free. The value doesn't matter, it's the fact that you have stolen something and committed the crime 'Stealing by Finding'. At the end of the day anything you take that hasn't been paid for isn't yours to keep and should be returned to the rightful owner, ie the store. How would you feel if someone found something of yours and kept it rather than return it? Not so good, eh?

I have done both. I have taken items back, much more often than not. Twice I kept the item, both times I was tired and decided to deal with it later. Then was reluctant to go back in with a non purchased item. So, no matter how you feel at the time, or even if your in a time crunch it's better to take it back right away, because even with good intentions you probably won't do it later.

I'd pay. I don't like to think of my Karma suffering because of stealing something I didn't pay for. I truly believe that what goes around comes around, and if I didn't pay for it, I'd lose 3 times that amount someplace else.

And, the other answerer is also correct -- theft makes prices go up for everyone. Paying is just the right thing to do!

That's happened to me twice and both times I went back in to pay for it...I know sounds dorky...but I have friends that worked in retail when I was younger and some of the reason prices increase is because of theft...and let's face it I can barely afford to shop now so why would I want to help prices go up?

when in college , me and my friends used to flick things from the supermarket... just for fun ;)

but one incident changed all that... I was once caught and yet, the manager treated me with respect... and let me go!
I was so ashamed.. especially bcoz he was so nice to me inspite of knowing what I did... I never stole again ;) so yea.. I would go and pay back to answer your question.
