For colors, how about colors of the rainbow - they are bright, and cheery or find some little trinkets she has or had in her house, take them with you, kind of like an antique theme. You could mix the rainbow theme and the antique theme - we took once an old photo in, of family memeber and their wedding. We had the photo scanned and put on a cake. Somehow, some bakeries can scan a photo and transfer it to the cake icing so it was edible. Add the rainbows and different colors to the edges of the cake as a finishing touch. Don't forget the words: Happy 88th Birthday!
As for the trinkets you could bring with you have her talk about the trinkets and things in her life. (be sure to have a video recorder taping her memories - it's kind of like a walk down memory lane - and usually is very charming and blessed) My great-grandmother lived to be 100, and one of her birthdays, she talked to me about many different things, and I was lucky enough to get it all on tape. It is priceless advice and priceless memories. There were things she told me that she lived through, things she did - that today, it is hard to even fathom.
As for gifts, the gift of time with ones family is priceless and a gift in and of itself. But if you feel you should take something try buying, PJ's, slippers, lotion, if she still goes and gets her hair done, a prepaid trip to the hairdressers.

2 give a birthday party 2 an old granny means 2 know the likes/dislikes f an old person.so,u mike, should celebrate a party where there should b music f the age f ur granma.
the aged people do not eat much f swet,theref prepare a cake with less calories. a simple handmade card from u would give ur granma more happiness as any other precious thing.

A hobby she had when she was younger for example dancing you could set up the place you are holding it in the style of a dance hall or something like that.

see what you can research from the year she was born and see if something stands out that is not too difficult to set up in a short time frame..........or just make it a tea party, most older women like them
