Beware!
Rats smell even while still alive.
You could use a dog to find it, but is better you call some professional. And yes, how can you be sure it's a rat... it could be a cat or another pet, maybe something exotic that you wouldn't like to see

I have an early boys book that gives you the answer to this sort of problem. You catch a couple of blue bottle flies. I suppose you good lurk around outside your local butchers with a jam jar. You then let them loose in your house and follow their route. In no time they will have detected the poor old dead rat

If you use the traps, you can avoid bad smell like this.

Glue traps are the best method to trap rats and mice.
I found detailed information at http://www.pests.in

Joop afterhsave to get rid of the smell. Might be risky but sending a cat or dog in there to sniff for it will find it! Then just pop it in a black bag!

Call a professional, rats can carry diseases. (I think dead ones can too. I mean obviously they will not bite you, but I wouldn't risk anything with rats).

Sounds gross.. lol If I were you, I let some professional find it, because it may lead to a rat's nest. If you live under rent, let the landlord take care of it! =)
