Such actions illustrate why some nations should be not given admittance to the United Nations. I have said this before, but in order to join this world body, there should be a set of criteria that every nation must meet. If they do not, then they are not allowed membership. When this type of selection is implemented, the world will have eliminated its need for sanctions and other punitive resolutions.

As for Ahmadinejad, Iran will push forward, very quickly, in the development of its nuclear program. There is little the United States can do to Iran, sans military strike, considering we already have decades old sanctions in place against Iran. A military strike will end as a tragedy for both sides. If the United States, and other European Union countries, were to directly engage Iran in dialogue, it might work to curtail the escalation of hostilities and result in a stalemate, or even concessions by Tehran.

When any country has veto power, then the United nations cannot work. Iran is not the only country that has defied UN sanctions. Nor will they be the last. As far as punishing Iran for it's nuclear program, they have been punished by sanctions since the 1980's, they cannot sell their oil. Developing a nuclear ENERGY program is okay for the rest of the world but not Iran? If it is a weapons program appropriate measures will be taken, you can count on that. Check the history of the UN and see who has ignored the most UN sanctions , Iran is no better or worse than China, Israel and many other nations. Veto power makes a mockery of the best intentions because of the very nature of what a veto means. Even the worst nutcases have their allies so their never will be a United(in the full sense of the word) Nations.
