I've read 2 views on this. One says if babies sleep too much in the day it will affect their sleeping in the night, mainly because they have their day and night mixed up. The other says if babies receive too much stimulation in the day when they are awake, they find it hard to go to sleep at night. So should I let sleeping babies lie?

Let the baby sleep during the day. Take cues from your baby to determine when he/she should be asleep or awake. An easy way to keep them from getting days & nights mixed up is to keep the lights off at night, with a small light if you must feed or change them. Keep it light during the day when they are napping.

Absolutely let your baby sleep when it is sleepy. Do NOT wake your baby up in the daytime to try and make it sleep more at night. The baby will wake up on its own.

Here's a useful explanation from kidshealth.org. More at the link.

"The First 6 Months

There is no sleep formula for newborns because their internal clocks aren't fully developed yet. They generally sleep or drowse for 16 to 20 hours a day, divided about equally between night and day.

Newborns should be awakened every 3 to 4 hours until their weight gain is established, which typically happens within the first couple of weeks. After that, it's OK if a baby sleeps for longer periods of time. But don't get your slumber hopes up just yet — most infants won't snooze for extended periods of time because they get hungry.

Newborns' longest sleep periods are generally 4 or 5 hours — this is about how long their small bellies can go between feedings. If newborns do sleep for a while, they will likely be extra hungry during the day and may want to nurse or get the bottle more frequently.

Just when parents feel that sleeping through the night seems like a far-off dream, their baby's sleep time usually begins to shift toward night. At 3 months, a baby averages 5 hours of sleep during the day and 10 hours at night, usually with an interruption or two. About 90% of babies this age sleep through the night, meaning 6 to 8 hours in a row."

Let that baby sleep. Six weeks is a little young, and they will not have day and night mixed up. Sleeping through the night has more to do with maturation of the digestive system, so that they can go longer between feedings, and weight of the baby (10 pounds is a more settled baby than 8 pounds). Relax.

a baby that young is on its own schedule. you just have to deal with it. when it get older you can try to keep it awake more thourgout the day so it will sleep better at night. let the baby sleep. i NEVER wake my son (4 months old) if he is sleeping. he needs it. if you were sleeping would you want somone to wake you because they think you should be sleeping less? just let the sweet baby sleep and enjoy some quite while you can. my baby is down to about 3 naps a day. please let you child get the necessery rest.

The best thing is to consult a Pediatrician.

When babies sleep during the day they are allowing their neurons to grow and have better connections (synapsis). This will help his future intelligence.

During the day a baby should play a bit , sleep, be changed, cleaned, fed, and taken for a walk.
Nevertheless sleeping is very important.

Now if he sleeps exceedingly, go see a good doctor, its your best investment. Follow his recomendations.

it depends. Is she sleeping at night. If not I would try to keep her up a little more in the afternoon so she will sleep at night better. Its easier to get them on a schedule if you start young
