There is a meteor shower every year around Jan 3rd - 4th.
They're called the Quantrantids.

No didn't hear - it would be helpful if you identified which moors? Did you mean Bodmin, Yorkshire etc.
There are the Northern lights too but not sure if they are viewable in January.
Sky at Night, or simply search the web for news "strange lights over moors" UK
